Gardening has always been a "plant first, ask questions later" activity for me, something I did compulsively in my spare time just for the joy of getting dirty and seeing things grow. I am also an avid insect watcher, so when I read that worldwide insect populations are plummeting, my gardening compulsion took on new meaning. I have turned my small town plot in Lee into an insect and bird friendly habitat with as many native species as I can get in. With COVID shutting down the other projects I had planned for 2020, I decided to put my whole attention on educating myself on permaculture and native gardening. Some friends and I have started a small garden group to share plants, resources and what we learn as we go. I've been inspired to learn even more with Helia Native Nursery https://www.helianativenursery.com/, Berkshire Botanical Gardens https://www.berkshirebotanical.org/; Grow Native Mass https://grownativemass.org/; and Pollinator Pathway https://www.pollinator-pathway.org/ This year I succeeded in eliminating all my lawn while adding some great hangout places for people as well as insects - no more mowing! My neighbors are inspired by the beauty of the garden, and now I am working with them to plant the verges in front of their homes with native pollinator plants. I am now working on a plan to get the town of Lee on the Pollinator Pathway map. Next spring I hope to use my garden as a place to show people what's possible - I recommend starting small, growing what you love, and getting help as needed. Then watch and see what happens as you share the bounty.
